Aurora acted as our retained Radiation Protection Adviser and were key partners in the surrender of our Environment Agency Permit as part of the site decommissioning of our large pharmaceutical R&D site in the UK. To achieve the detail of surrender documentation required in a very tight schedule, Aurora demonstrated the highest level of project management and technical skills, using a team with specific experience for the task and had access to a wide range of monitoring equipment to achieve the required outcome.

Furnell Transport have worked alongside Aurora Health Physics Services Ltd (Aurora) on a number of decommissioning and transportation projects since 2008 and given the working relationship that had been built up in this time with a number of their personnel, we decided to appoint Aurora as our Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) in 2012.

Their knowledge, expertise and understanding of the legal requirements and regulations, especially within our industry, has been invaluable and they have been able to offer their expertise to a number or our clients as well, providing us with the security that any shipments overseen by Aurora will be within scope and technically sound.

I am very grateful to Aurora for their professional support and advice. Their team advised us on all radiological aspects for the project. Before the project started, they conducted a radiological survey, prepared risk assessments and method statements and supported our contractors by providing training and guidance on regulatory requirements. The subsequent engineering works were carried out safely and successfully, with no significant contamination events. The work was completed on time and the impact on surrounding areas was minimised. Aurora also assisted with sentencing and disposal of radioactive waste from the project. Well done!

One of our main uses of Aurora is for training. Our RPA consistently receives praise for his relaxed delivery, vast knowledge and interesting insights. We always allow plenty of time for Q&A as he manages to fully engage attendees.

As we have grown, we have developed more specialist training requirements and have jointly developed and delivered our own syllabus, tailored to what we do. This has proven invaluable in raising the skills of the department and increasing awareness around some of our more specialist topics.
